semantics and semantics features- meeting 3

In linguistics, semantics refers to the study of meaning in language. Semantic features are characteristics or attributes of words or phrases that contribute to their meaning. These features are often used to describe the meanings of words in a systematic way.

For example, consider the word "dog". Some of the semantic features associated with this word might include:

  • animate: the word refers to a living thing
  • quadruped: the word refers to an animal with four legs
  • domesticated: the word refers to an animal that has been tamed and lives with humans
  • canine: the word refers to a type of animal that is closely related to wolves and foxes
  • furry: the word refers to an animal with fur or hair

These semantic features help to define the meaning of the word "dog" and distinguish it from other words with similar meanings, such as "cat" or "hamster". By analyzing the semantic features of words, linguists can better understand how meaning is constructed in language.

Pragmatics, on the other hand, is concerned with the study of meaning in language in context, and how speakers use language to achieve their communicative goals.
